The Romney Marsh Natural Area is well known for the extent of
its wetland habitats ranging from the large shingle expanse of Dungeness
to the drainage ditches and small ponds of the surrounding farmland.
These in return boast an impressive diversity of flora and fauna.
The area has received international recognition through several
wildlife designations, National Nature Reserve (NNR), Local Nature
Reserve (LNR) Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) Special
Area of Conservation (SAC), Special Protection Area (SPA), RAMSAR
(internationally important wetland) and Site of Nature Conservation
Interest (SNCI) can all be found within the Romney Marsh Natural
Area.
All the foopaths which cross the Marsh are a fantastic way to explore
an discover the wildlife of the interior. On the other hand, the
quiet and flat country lanes provide excellent, safe cycling for
family groups and includes a section of National Cycle Route 2.
The Romney Marsh Countryside Project
In order to help visiting walkers and cyclists, the Romney Marsh
Countryside Project has produced two self-guided publications that
explore the beauty of the surrounding countryside. Each of the guides
contains detailed route of information as well as points of historical
and natural interest. There are available for purchase from tourist
information centres or the Romney Marsh Countryside Project.
A free historic Town Trail leaflet, that is also available, drives
the visitor around the historic town of New Romney
from the start point outside of the tourist information centre.
The Romney Marsh Countryside Project leads several free events throghout
the year including guided walks and cycle riders. Details of these

from tourist information centres or the web site.
